Understanding Your MEPCO Electricity Bill
The Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) is one of the largest electricity distribution companies in Pakistan, serving millions of consumers across South Punjab. It is responsible for supplying electricity to residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural sectors.
Every month, MEPCO issues electricity bills to its customers based on the amount of electricity consumed. Understanding the components of this bill is essential to avoid overcharging and to keep track of your electricity usage.
A typical MEPCO bill contains several key sections. At the top of the bill, you’ll find customer information such as the consumer’s name, address, meter number, and reference number. This reference number is unique and essential for checking your bill online. The bill also displays the billing month, due date, and the number of units consumed during the period.
One of the most critical sections of the MEPCO bill is the meter reading and consumption detail. It shows the previous and current meter readings and calculates the total units used. Based on this usage, the energy charges are calculated using a slab-based tariff system. For example, the cost per unit increases as the number of units consumed increases. This tiered system encourages consumers to use electricity wisely and stay within lower consumption brackets to pay less.
In addition to the basic energy charges, the MEPCO bill includes various additional costs. These may include the fuel price adjustment (FPA), which varies each month based on the cost of fuel used to generate electricity. Government taxes such as General Sales Tax (GST), Electricity Duty (ED), and the PTV license fee are also added. Sometimes, there are charges like the Neelum–Jhelum surcharge or tariff rationalization charges, depending on government policies.
The bill also indicates whether any previous amounts have been deferred or carried forward, along with any penalties for late payment. If the bill is not paid on time, a late payment surcharge is added, increasing the total payable amount. It is essential to pay your bill before the due date to avoid such penalties and maintain a good payment history.
For customer convenience, MEPCO has introduced various ways to check and pay bills. You can check your MEPCO bill online using the 14-digit reference number through official and third-party websites. MEPCO also offers an SMS service to get bill information directly on your mobile phone. Payment can be made through online banking, mobile apps like JazzCash and Easypaisa, and at designated banks.
